What to Expect Upon Arrival
Once cleared from medical withdrawal (if required), you will connect with the case manager who will work closely with you for your entire stay. Your case manager’s detailed assessments will include arranging different treatments that might help with your specific problems. Assessment is what makes individualized care possible and helps us gauge if a treatment is effective for you. A team of counsellors also facilitates daily group therapy that you have with the rest of your peers. You will also begin assessments with our other practitioners from the clinical, medical, fitness, and nutrition teams.
Our Drug & Alcohol Treatment Program
Psychological (or ‘talk’) therapy serves as the foundation of our clinical program because it is the form of therapy most supported by research and this is where clients and therapist focus on the therapeutic relationship. To facilitate the client-therapist relationship, we utilize addiction counselling methods that reflect the Rogerian* principles of unconditional, positive regard, empathy, and genuineness.
Complementary and alternative therapies include many of the therapies that help round out our clinical program. Many of the alternative therapies we offer (such as EMDR) approach a traumatic or distressing memory that may not always respond to talk or drug therapy. While empirical studies into these complementary and alternative therapies may be considered preliminary, we will continue to provide them to clients until research suggests otherwise.
*Note: ‘Rogerian’ refers to the pioneering work of psychologist Carl Rogers (1902-1987).
Program Overview
Apart from families and partners, your relationship with your peers during your stay is an important step in your recovery. We address the tendency of those struggling with addiction to isolate when coping with life’s challenges. By sharing their experiences and supporting others who are struggling with similar issues, clients can experience strength in numbers. While many clients are initially apprehensive about small group therapy, their feedback later shows it’s one of the highlights of an overall great program.
Sharing intimate thoughts and living together for an extended period can also be the catalyst for romance in a co-ed residential care environment. Men and women in early recovery are particularly vulnerable to jumping into unhealthy relationships. This can have a devastating impact on marriages and have a “triangulating” effect in the peer group where jealousy and rivalries can start. We made our treatment center intentionally “female-only” so that clients can experience the power of the peer group in a safe environment.
